Manual Machinist


Fabricates metallic and nonmetallic workpieces for use in the design and building of production equipment in accordance of specifications, general descriptions and drawn sketches and/or blueprints. Calculates feed rates, cutting speeds, depth and angles of cuts using a variety of machine tools. Determines cutting tools to be used. Observes machine operation for malfunctions and out of tolerance machining and makes necessary adjustments as needed. Verifies accuracy of workpiece measurements to specifications by use of calipers, micrometers, height gauges. May install machined parts into production equipment to insure functionality and operational performance.


An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. (These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.)

Works with specifications, general descriptions and sketches supplied by Engineers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic workpieces for existing production equipment or those being designed and built for new products.

Selects stock material to be used by examining blueprints, sketches or specifications to determine type of stock material to be used. Lays out design for workpiece according to dimensions computed from blueprints and scale drawings.

Calculates and sets machine controls to regulate the speed, feed, coolant flow, depth and angle of cut and type of cutting tool to be used. Determines what shop related equipment such as drill press, lathe, milling machine, CNC machining center and grinders should be used.

Aligns and secures holding fixtures, attachments and accessories and materials on such machines as, mills, lathes, grinders, and CNC machine.

Operates machine equipment while observing and detecting malfunctions of equipment or out of tolerance machining. Adjusts machine controls as needed.

Verifies dimensions and alignment of machined parts in accordance with specifications by using various mechanical measuring devices such as, micrometers, calipers, height gauges, gauge blocks and surface gauges.

Files, grinds, burnishes and polishes workpieces needed for smooth operational movement.

Fits and assembles machined parts into a complete assembly. May install machined parts into or on the production equipment to insure the functionality and performance of the workpiece.

Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

Position requires regular and predictable attendance.

Employees are held accountable for all duties of this job.


Confers with Engineers and Machine Operators on the assembly and operation of machined parts.


An employee in this position, upon appointment, should have the equivalent of the following:

Knowledge of the properties of metals, nonmetals and resins.

Knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures.

Knowledge of machining.

Knowledge of machine shop mathematics.

Knowledge of and actual experience setting up and working with drill presses, milling machines, lathes, CNC machine and grinders.

Knowledge of, and actual experience working with, various measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, gauge blocks and surface gauges.

Skill in developing and maintaining effective work relationships.

Ability to follow written and verbal directions and sketches with limited supervision.

Ability to read and follow blueprints, sketches and specifications.

Ability to review blueprints and visualize machining required.

Acceptable Training and Experience includes a high school diploma or equivalent. An Associate's degree in machining and/or machine shop theory and procedures would be highly beneficial. Job shop experience would be highly beneficial. Previous machine shop work experience within an R&D engineering area is highly desired.

Work Environment

Shop equipment area. Exposures to fumes from cutting oils and coolants. Dust from metal chips. Possible hazards from parts shattering while being machined.

Pay Range: $26.00-$40.30 + discretionary bonus
